What is a Shaker Kitchen

What is a Shaker Kitchen?

There are a few different kitchen cabinet types and our aim in this article is to talk you through them one by one so you have a better understanding of options when it comes to planning your dream kitchen.

What edge looks best for shaker cabinets?

For the most timeless classic shaker kitchen a square edge is probably the go-to edge to opt for. Any classic shaker kitchens you’ve seen will most likely just have a square edge. There are though, other edges you can choose. We love a lambs tongue moulded edge with a  square centre panel which we call the Oxford door. You could also have a heavily moulded edge with a raised centre panel that has a bevelled edge, sometimes known as a raise and fielded door.

Why are shaker cabinets a good and classic choice?

Shaker kitchen furniture, due to the way it’s made are extremely durable and can last for years. We actually recently went back to a shaker kitchen we installed over thirty years ago and it was still in pristine condition. With in-frame shaker doors that are fixed via butt hinges the doors are also less prone to dropping. These doors and frames are made and assembled by hand and so are typically more expensive but they will also last a lot longer.

In units such as fridge freezers where the door doesn’t open on a butt hinge, a frame is still pinned to the outside of the shaker door to make it look like the rest of the kitchen units.

Further to consider with food prep is whether you have your sink on the island or not? Some people find it easier for prep but others don’t like the mess it creates which is easily visible from the rest of the kitchen. This typically though is a question of kitchen range – more traditional kitchens do have sinks and taps on the island compared to more modern kitchens which typically have the hob on the island.

Other points

In order to create a bespoke design you need to choose the shaker style kitchen that suits you and your personality and preferences. When choosing shaker cabinets you then have a choice of either square framing or quirk bead framing. A quirk bead framing will give the look of a more traditional kitchen but the choices for shaker kitchen styles really are endless.

In terms of finishes you could then either choose a painted shaker door or a veneered shaker door. Veneered shaker doors are formed from the solid timber you are choosing so either oak, ash or walnut and then a veneered centre panel to match – again if you opt for bespoke kitchen units then you should have these choices in terms of kitchen cabinets.

With regards to fridge freezers, American style fridge freezers are the go-to for traditional kitchens and these can either be with stainless steel doors showing or integrated i.e. behind shaker doors.

Your choices for colours are pretty limitless. The time of light grey colourings have probably passed now although we have done kitchens recently using a light grey and a secondary colour like Farrow and Ball railings on the island.

Hopefully this short guide has helped inform your choices for shaker kitchen ranges but be sure to speak to your kitchen designer to see if there are any kitchen offers for shaker kitchens.

What a wonderful experience from beginning to end. We certainly weren’t the easiest customers , we weren’t sure what we wanted or when ! However Donna, Richard, Rich and their amazing team guided us through the process with utter professionalism as well as warmth and patience. The results exceeded our expectations, particularly the attention to every detail. They wouldn’t rest until they knew we were happy with everything. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them or use them again.

It has been an absolute pleasure to deal with The Wood Works. Our existing kitchen was 20 years old, and the layout of the room did not make use of the available space. Josh produced inspired ideas for re-designing the whole area, and really listened to what we wanted to achieve, patiently fine-tuning the plans to our particular requirements. We are now the proud owners of a stunning and practical new kitchen which has completely exceeded our expectations. When my sister visited for the first time, she said "it looks like the kitchen of a celebrity chef!" (which I am not). What a transformation. The Wood Works is a family-run business, and that really shows in terms of their professional service, quality of fittings, attention to detail, reliability and easy communication. Nothing was too much trouble. At the start of the project, Josh promised we would have our kitchen by Christmas. I was sceptical as we were in the midst of the pandemic, but they delivered as promised, with no hitches. Thoroughly recommend.
