Richard Delane

Richard left school at 17, becoming the 3rd generation to work in the family business. Known as Denmor Furniture, it produced living room and dining room cabinets sold at all major retailers including Harrods and Selfridges. With his father as Managing Director, Richard started at the bottom spending the next 13 years working in every part of the company and making his way up the ranks.

When Richard turned 28 the founders were ready to leave the business, so he decided to use his now vast knowledge and experience and set up on his own. The Wood Works was born in 1990 on the premises of the old Denmor factory in London’s East End. Richard started out as a one-man band, with Donna, his wife, helping when she could while still working as an advertising executive for Apple and Gillette. Donna eventually came on board full-time to run logistics and administration. Over the next few years Richard hired a handful of staff, and some of them are still with us to this day.

Richard’s original business had two branches. Wooden Tots produced children’s furniture for companies like John Lewis while The Wood Works was centred on bespoke furniture. The latter naturally took over and, having weathered 3 recessions, has become the sole focus and pride of today’s business, with presence extending to countries like Sweden, Spain, France, and Russia.
Furniture is Richard’s passion and he relishes the ability to go to a client with a blank sheet of paper and 6 weeks later produce a beautifully crafted functional piece that fills an empty room, gifting him a sense of (relatively) instant gratification.

Many of Richard’s clients have used The Wood Works for over 25 years to have their furniture made – filling him with great pride and joy – and now their children are turning to Richard and Donna to furnish their homes.

Richard’s always been a keen gym goer and enjoys his regular training sessions with Josh and Joel. He also loves playing golf, although often has to settle for dreaming about it – finding the time to get onto the course can be tough, when every waking hour is spent on bringing to life the next unique piece of furniture.
